Vestments

Vestments Glossary - Ken Collins guides us through the confusing array of ministerial vestments.  I can’t resist pointing out that what we think of as a Roman Catholic, a collar, is actually of Protestant origin.  Read the entries on, “Neckband Shirt” & “Tab-Collar Shirt”.

Douglas Wilson has a good article on vestments.  Although we at the Institute would be in favor of collars and vestments, Wilson has a knack for boiling the issue down to really practical points, which we need to consider.  We do need to have a conversation about this, and we do need to learn a whole lot more about liturgical garb before we simply don whatever is selling in vestments catalogues.  A good place to start is Max Thurian’s The Eucharistic Memorial, vol. 1 (chap. 5).  Thurian has a short history and theology of vestements there.

  1. I’d like to point you to my post on vestments. It was done while I was in seminary and working at the PC(USA)’s Office of Theology and Worship.
